The BC HRMA Annual General Meeting was held June 23, 2011 at the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver: both business and celebration were on the agenda.

Mike Cass, CHRP was elected president, Lewisa Anciano, CHRP and Len Posyniak, CHRP were re-elected and Shaun Carpenter was a new addition to the Board of Directors. These appointments were effective as of June 24, 2011.

Outgoing director Sharon Bryan, CHRP, although not present, was acknowledged for her contributions to BC HRMA. In recognition of her work with BC HRMA outgoing president Jay-Ann Fordy, CHRP was presented with a traditional First Nation talking stick. Appreciation was also voiced for BC HRMA’s countless volunteers.

Other business included the voting, and passing, of special resolutions to amend the bylaws of the Association. The changes intended to clarify the election process for Board of Directors and included allowing elections to be held by mail ballot, electronic ballot or telephone in order to enable members to vote if they are unable to attend the AGM.

As one of the final acts as president, Fordy provided an overview of the current status of the association, highlighting a few key achievements of the past year:

  • Membership growth occurred in all regions and reached a total of 5,179;
  • More than 60% of the voting membership holds the CHRP designation;
  • BC HRMA scored a 76% satisfaction rating in the annual member survey;
  • The HR Metrics Service had significant growth and now has 65 participating organizations across Canada; and
  • Average attendance and positive evaluation results increased for professional development programming.

Fordy also spoke about the outcomes from the Board’s strategic planning meeting in January 2011. The Board has identified three targets: raising the profile of HR in the business community with assistance from a public relations firm, building business-to-business partnerships across Western Canada, and continuing excellence in CHRP accreditation. Updates to the strategic vision included:

  • Mandate: Promote and enhance the professional designation and advance member value
  • Vision: Recognized as “The Place” for leading people practices
  • Mission: Keep people first in the decisions of leaders

More detailed information on the successes of the past year and the strategic goals leading forward is included in the AGM Report, which is available in its entirety online.
